What the Pokémon card light test can show

The Pokémon card light test can reveal stock that is unusually translucent, but passing it does not prove that a card is genuine.

What the test actually observes

The light test places a light source behind a card and observes how much light passes through the printed layers and core. It does not directly identify the paper, ink, adhesive, or printing process.

A very translucent card can expose a construction mismatch. An opaque result says much less because both genuine stock and better counterfeit stock can block light.

Make the comparison controlled

Use the same cool light source, distance, room lighting, card orientation, and viewing angle for both cards. Keep the light in place briefly and do not press a hot lamp against either surface.

The control should be a known card from the same set, language, variant, print run, and year. A standard card and a foil card, or two unrelated releases, can behave differently for legitimate reasons.

Do not let a camera decide the result

Phone cameras automatically change exposure, focus, white balance, and contrast. Two photographs can make identical transmission look different, especially when the bright light source dominates the frame.

If photographs are needed, lock the exposure when possible and capture both cards in the same setup. Record the visual observation separately rather than treating image brightness as a measurement.

Understand false reassurance

A counterfeit with an opaque or dark inner layer may look much like a genuine card during the test. That is why “it passed the light test” is not proof of authenticity.

The test is best at flagging a pronounced mismatch, not clearing a card. Even then, confirm that sleeves, foil coverage, card type, and the comparison printing are not responsible for the difference.

Add observations that test different features

Identify the exact printing, then compare text, symbols, borders, registration, surface finish, foil behavior, and undamaged edges. Use raking light for surface detail and even light for color rather than relying on a single backlit view.

Do not rip or cut the card to investigate a surprising light result. A clearly exposed core on an already-damaged edge may add evidence, but an intact card should remain intact.
